What Is Considered a Dental Emergency?

Dental emergencies commonly involve pain, injury, or lost or broken dental work. Some emergencies we frequently see at our Round Lake dental office include:

  • Severe toothache
  • Jaw pain or swelling
  • Broken tooth
  • Cracked tooth
  • Lost dental filling or crown
  • Knocked-out or partially knocked-out tooth
  • Dental abscess or infection
  • Trauma to the mouth

If you experience any of these situations, please don't hesitate to contact us right away. Prompt treatment spares you unnecessary pain and suffering and often makes the difference between saving and losing a tooth.

How to Handle Dental Emergencies

Toothache

Don't ignore tooth pain; it is your body’s way of telling you something serious is happening with your oral health. You can reduce inflammation by rinsing your mouth with warm water. Floss gently around the tooth to remove food stuck between teeth.

Minimize swelling by applying a cold compress on your cheek near the affected tooth. Take an OTC medication like ibuprofen to temporarily relieve pain. Contact us so we can get you in to see what’s happening and provide relief.

Lost Dental Crown or Filling

Retrieve the crown or any filling fragments you can find and keep them in a safe place until your appointment. Rinse your mouth with warm saltwater and, if possible, place the crown back on the tooth to protect it. Call Cedar Lake Dental as soon as possible.

Broken Tooth

Collect any tooth fragments you find and bring them to your appointment. Rinse your mouth with warm water to clean the area. Use a cold compress on your cheek to reduce swelling. Call us promptly to schedule an appointment.

Knocked-Out Tooth

It is critical to act quickly in the case of a knocked-out tooth. Handle the tooth by the crown only. It is crucial to keep the root moist, so try placing the tooth back in its socket; if you can’t, put the tooth in a container of milk or saliva. Or, you can hold the tooth between your cheek and gums. Come to our office right away.

How to Prevent Dental Emergencies

You can’t avoid all dental emergencies, but you can take steps to minimize them. Stay current with regular check-ups and cleanings, and protect your teeth with a mouthguard during sports activities. Avoiding hard or crunchy foods that might crack your teeth can also help reduce your risk.
